The Editor in Chief of the Daily Monitor, Mr Joachim Buwembo, has been sacked by the Nation Media Group. Reports from a source who knows what took place said Buwembo is leaving Monitor in the first week of July.
Reports say that Buwembo is to be replaced as acting Editor in Chief by the current office bureau head of the East African for Kampala, Mr Daniel Kalinaki.
The reason why Buwembo has been sacked, according to a source at the Nation Media Group who gets info for Radio Katwe is because he had turned into an editor who was receiving bribes from public figures so that their scandals are kept quiet. Apart from the claims of this source, Radio Katwe has not yet got hard evidence of this.
But you will remember that Radio Katwe wrote many times last year that Buwembo was frustrating young reporters at Monitor who had hot news on corruption but when they would give it to Buwembo to approve, he would sit on the stories.
It appears that Buwembo has been under the handle of the Inspector General of Police Major General Kale Kayihura and other corrupt officials like the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sam Kuteesa.
The Nation Media Group based in Nairobi has decided to sack him although another source at Monitor has informed us that as a face saving measure, they made the sack look like Buwembo was retiring of his own accord.
We are still researching this story and will give you more information if it becomes available.
