Dear Radio Katwe, I feel so privileged and honoured for having been given this great chance of communicating and sharing my grief with fellow Ugandans the world over.
Dr Sulaiman Kiggundu as a principled, intelligent and well experienced economist of international standard got himself into problems with some of the megalomaniac shareholders of the bank who wanted to be counted as the brains behind the success of the envied conglomerate. One such man known for thrusting himself forward to catch the limelight is Mr Kaddu Kiberu (Managing Director, Peacock Paints).
I don't know of anyone, in any field who valued education and loathed the opposite of it more than 'brother. Sula'. Dr Kiggundu7s persistent refusal to implement Kaddu's less than well though out business ideas drew a lot of dislike from the 'school drop out'.
This is how the hypocrisy and intrigue began. One of the backdoors used to access and eventually bring down Dr Kigundu was agent provocateur Kaddu Kiberu, who is a confidant of Gen. Salim Saleh. Saleh's mission, assigned by his brother (president Museveni) was to bring down, to puncture the growing 'conceit of Kiggundu' (as it was perceived), and curtail his growing influence and power in the huge following he commanded among Ugandans from all walks of life including Muslims, many Baganda and the Democratic Party (DP).
We all know that the Catholic Church had already anointed him as the successor to former DP leader Dr Paul Semwogerere and he was seen as the only Muganda who could beat Museveni by then.
Uganda Grain Milling Company (UGMC) was a government company making such household products as our beloved Tiptop bread, Kob maize flour, Drum wheat flour among others. In 1996, it was 'privatised', (what we now know in hindsight was a systematic strategy of 'destroy and grab' disguised as government policy)
Gen. Salim Saleh's company Caleb International 'won' the bid to buy this company, whose assets were valued by some at 17 billion shillings. Caleb International beat out one of East Africa's most successful food processing companies Unga Limited by offering 4.3 billion but there was a problem, Saleh didn't have that money.
So Museveni picked up a phone, called Dr Kiggundu and 'begged' him to help his young brother Saleh by extending a loan to enable him buy UGMC. Out of honesty, kindness and good intentions, Dr Kiggundu agreed. Caleb International transferred ownership of UGMC to Greenland Investments immediately and it is assumed Saleh, by virtue of being a shareholder was only looking for his commission on this deal.
Having been lured into the UGMC deal, the three Musketeers (father, son and uncle) hatched the second plot by ensnaring him to buy UCB.
In this deal daddy Museveni involved his son Muhoozi and uncle Saleh and they shared 11 million GB Pounds which Westmont had paid to buy UCB. This is why Dr Kiggundu was refused a chance to explain to Ugandans what exactly happened, and the circumstances surrounding the dramatic fall of his bank. His life was in danger should he have dared reveal in the media, the murky details of these dirty deals and the colour of the baskets each one of the Musketeers (Museveni ,Saleh and Muhoozi) brought to put in their ill gotten cash!
It is no accident as some have observed, that Mr Kaddu Kiberu has physical similarities to President Kagame, because his mother is also Rwandese (a Tutsi to be exact). Kaddu grew up in Rwanda where his Ugandan father met his mother. His was brought to Uganda by his elder brother Aga Sekalala senior (Managing Director, Ugachik) who went to Rwanda to collect his fathers "spoils of war". For along time, Kaddu was working at his brothers Jumbo petrol station which was at the junction between Parliamentary avenue and Kampala road.
For those familiar with him, Kaddu Kiberu has been known to exhibit behaviour associated with mental disorders known as "spilt personality disorder", or at times another one called "manic depressive psychosis". In his "high" state, Kaddu's thirst for recognition and the limelight knows no bounds. The man will work himself and everyone up to desperately create "Kaddumania" in whatever project he happens to be involved in.
He has served the Kabaka in the Mengo government under all the Kattikiro's Many come and go but Kaddu is a permanent fixture in Mengo. It is anyone's guess whether with his close links with the highest offices in the government, he is not there to confound the Mengo establishment and to serve the interests of his master Museveni.
As Omuganda I have great respect and love for my Kabaka I cant address him in this forum, but the Kattikiro should take this information to the attention of the Kabaka.
The other problem Dr Kiggundu had was that of Mr Ahmed Garelnabi the MD of Concorp who is a very close friend of Dr Hassan Al Turabi. He built the Greenland Towers without being paid anything so powers that be thought that Turabi had a hand in Greenland Group of companies. One of the biggest problems of Africa is the 'evil eye'. No one wants to let the other develop, we gauge our success through the failures of others, this is wrong! The so called State agents got it wrong, Museveni was witch hunting the wrong man whose sole objective was to help get his fellow countrymen out of endless poverty. Dr Kiggundu didn't approve of the World Bank Structural Adjustment Programs (SAPs) because he had seen their effects in different parts of world. Simply put, they are designed to 'impoverishment of the masses'.
Inalilahi wa ina ilaihi raajiuun-Sulaiman we all bear testimony you were a good man. May Allah forgive you all your sins and reward you fully-Amiin
