Zed Maruru's secret role in the NRA wars
Published : 19 Jan 2009, Kampala

One of our readers has sent us this letter:

"Dear RK may I know through your news desk the where about of this army officer call Zed Maruru who was at one time Brigade commander of Northern Region during UNLA.

There was rumours that he did contribute a lot to NRA by supplying train containers of arms to M7 just before NRA takeover of Kampala. I wonder whether his effort was rewarded or he?s dead now. Just curious."

Radio Katwe manager replies:- Major-General Zed Maruru is alive and lives in Kampala. At one time Maruru was a Brigadier in the UNLA, if we are not mistaken. He was later the Chief of Staff of the Military Council led by General Tito Okello Lutwa.

In addition to arms, other rumours by some former UNLA officers have said that Maruru also used to send UNLA uniforms to the NRA when they were in Luwero Triangle.

UNLA uniforms would arrive in Uganda for the army but within a matter of days, some of the uniforms would have found their way to the NRA bandits in Luwero.

These could be the uniforms which members of the NRA used to wear to terrorise the innocent civilians of Luwero and then the civilians think that their attackers were the UNLA, kumbe they were Museveni's men.

Museveni's method of fighting his wars has always been to be in the bush but to work with officers who would undermine the sitting government from within.

We have examples like Lt. Pecos Kutesa who was in the UNLA but his job as an NRA infiltrator was to harass civilians in and around Kampala so that the UNLA gets a bad name among the wanainchi.

Some of you readers who are old enough might remember Tony Nganwa who was an officer in the UNLA in 1982. Nganwa was in reality an NRA man whom Museveni had infiltrated into the UNLA.

When Dr. Andrew Kayiira's Uganda Freedom Movement attacked the Lubiri in Kampala in 1982, Nganwa was killed during the fighting.

Museveni's other infiltrators in the UNLA were men such as Jeje Odong who was based at Kabamba barracks at the time the Museveni group attacked Kabamba to launch their "liberation war" on Feb. 6, 1981. Odong was the man who gave Museveni intelligence on Kabamba and when it would be a good time to attack.

That is why he was rewarded with the job of army commander after Museveni became president. There was another collaborator/infiltrator at Kabamba in the UNLA by the names of Tadeo Kanyankole (RIP) who became a Brigadier in the NRA after Museveni took power.

So that is how Maruru, could have operated on behalf of Museveni. But as you would expect of Museveni, apparently, Maruru did not get a reward for his secret contribution to the NRA "struggle".

Dear editor thanks for good work I just want say some few words regarding Maruru. This double faced man came to Arua with the late Toko. The man looked very nervous even he could not smile in the meeting place. No wonder he was doing his dirty work. Even some of us wondered why Lutwa had given him such job as he was from the Western Uganda. We discussed it but Lutwa had wanted to bring a blood bath in the country which he paid the price. You can remember when Toko was removed from the Nairobi talks Toko had known all the tricks, he was very tough on M7 even he wanted to slap M7 for insisting on the useless issues.

Secondly the fall of the Lutwas government should be partly attributed to Olara Otunu who was not happy of people from West Nile. These people even used to refuse to supply our soldiers with arms at Katonga which made our boys to withdraw. I can assure all the Ugandans my brother called Pale was at the front line by that time he told me all the details, he told me that they had defeated the NRA but the confusion was from Olara Otunu which Toko himself told us in London when he was the treasurer of the West Nile Welfare Association in London this are facts.

As today Ugandans are paying the price Olara Otunu should be responsible Toko told us that Olara thought that we wanted to bring Amin back to power which was not in our mind we just wanted to stop the madness in our beloved country only.

Another reader wonders:

Fellow Ugandans let try to use some common sense here basing on the figures we receive from the government, its believe that the LRA are estimated to be about 650 people only. No break down on the composition is given which means this is their gross number: fighters, women and children.

Lets say half of the men have women, and each woman has an average of one child though there could be those with three, two, one or none. So we project it as 300 fighters, 150 women, 150 children and 50 abductees to give us 650 people.

The government also says these people are moving in small groups probably in 50s or at most 100, then my question comes, how can a group of 50 or 100 people kill 400+ (wouded not included) Congolese in one go using machetes etc and still continue to live among the population? Why didn't they carry out the killings in the past two years before the invasion of the UPDF? Why would they do it to the Congolese of all people?

Don't misquote me, I don't condone any form of aggression against innocent civilians by whoever. I'm not trying to make Kony a saint as he has his well made CV for all to see but to solve the equation, we have to look at the two variables in the form of Kony and UPDF. They are all culpable.

Has one ever thought why the UPDF always gets to the scene of such massacre shortly after the killings? And why don't they usually pursue them? Its because they can't shoot themselves in the foot.

If you could having a more credible opinion, version, please lets share it here on RK.
