Brig. Noble Mayombo died at 1.24 p.m. East African Time in Nairobi of pancreatic
failure caused by foreign poisonous substances. His stomach was swollen and skin turned greenish.
All Presidential Guard Brigade units in Kampala and Entebbe have been put on alert.
Museveni made phone calls to General Saleh, Major Kainerugaba and other senior army officers.
Special PGB security units on the
hills overlooking Entebbe Airport closed in on the airforce base and the nearby International airport.
Kampala is ablaze with rumours poisoning was on orders of Museveni.
Mayombos state has been setting all the seven hills of Kampala ablaze with
contradictory accounts with some saying he is not dead, later followed by talk that
Mayombo is dead.
We now confirm with the finality of death itself that the guessing game is over.
At the young age of 42, Mayombo has gone to meet his God.
We shall bring you updates as they come in but here is the late Mayombo's life at a glance:
-
Born 1965 in Fort Portal at Buhinga hospital.
Son of Reverend James Rwabwoni, a Protestant church minister.
-
Attended Buhinga Primary School. Then Nyakasura School. Did his High School Certificate (HSC) at Ntare School.
-
Joined Musevenis guerilla army, the National Resistance Army (NRA), in his native Toro after Western Uganda was cut off from Kampala by the fighting.
He worked mainly as a political cadre.
He has been a close informal advisor to Museveni ever since.
-
Studied Law at Makerere University.
-
Run for Makerere University Guild
presidency in 1989, but lost to fellow law student and now influential Gulu chairman and former MP Norbert Mao.
-
His second marriage was to a woman who is Janet Museveni's cousin.
But he had children from an earlier marriage to Christine Kajumba who he met as a fellow student at Makerere University.
They separated in the 1990s.
-
He was the NRA delegate to the Constituent Assembly in 1994, and army MP in 1996.
-
In 2001, Museveni appointed him Director of
Military Intelligence to replace Brig. Henry Tumukunde.
Under Mayombo, Military Intelligence became the now much feared Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI).
-
His tenure as head of CMI saw widespread
torture and many deaths ordered by Museveni. Opposition supporters were harassed, arrested, held by men from CMI in
safe houses, tortured and some killed. As but one example, Lt. Manenero of Kisoro was murdered by CMI operatives during Mayombo's tenure.
-
Mayombo was named in the UN report on looting of DR Congo.
-
He was part of the core officers charged with fabricating evidence for the cases of treason and support of PRA by then exiled
opposition leader Colonel Kizza Besigye.
-
In 2006, Museveni slotted him into the position of Chairman of New Vision newspaper board.
He was also appointed Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Defence in 2005.
-
Questioned missing accounts in Ministry of Defence, and unearthed solid evidence of massive, naked theft and shocking plunder.
A lot of it leading was directly to Museveni.
His unwillingness to keep quiet and look the other way like all his predecessors made Museveni realize that he could be exposed any time.
Mayombo had to go. In the same way used to
kill Brigadier Kamwesiga.
-
Pronounced dead at 1:24 p.m. in a Nairobi hospital on Labor Day, May 1st 2007, after previously succumbing to deadly poison given by Musevenis assasin.
Afande, we didn't agree on all things but we shall miss you.
May your soul rest in peace!
