Reports coming into the busy news bureau of Radio Katwe since Saturday talk of a very serious political crisis developing in Uganda.
On Friday night, three top officials of the Buganda kingdom were arrested in Kampala and charged with causing public unrest, insulting the person of President Yoweri Museveni, and engaging in acts of terrorism.
Charles Peter Mayiga and Medad Lubega ministers in the Buganda cabinet and Betty Namboze the Mengo official in charge of educating Buganda on the land reform bill were taken by police after 5:00p.m.
Namboze's car had its windows smashed by Military Intelligence operatives as she was making her way to Kampala near Spear Motors complex at Nakawa.
By Monday morning, the three were reported to be in different jails in western Uganda although by lunchtime on Monday independent sources said the three had been transferred again from the jails to unknown destinations.
A yellow helicopter was seen flying over Kampala skies early on Saturday morning and sources think this is the helicopter which could have flown them to the prisons.
Reports from Mengo say that the Mengo officials have a list of over 40 Baganda who it is expected are to be arrested in the coming days. Radio Katwe is trying to find out the full list of these 40 people.
Sources in Military Intelligence tell Radio Katwe informers that according to their investigations, the Rwanda government has been hatching out a plan to smuggle a lot of arms into Uganda and use its connections with Mengo to overthrow the Museveni government by force of arms.
A source in Kigali says that Uganda's CMI has been monitoring heavy truck traffic between Uganda and Rwanda to intercept the arms. The arms to overthrow Museveni, according to sources inside CMI were purchased by Rwanda's Ministry of Defence under the cover of them being arms for the Rwandan Defence Force (RDF).
There has been no comment from Rwanda on these allegations. Last week, sources at the Kampala Serena Hotel say they saw the Director of the Rwandan State Security Services, Col. Dr. Emmanuel Ndahiro, at the Serena with the Rwandan ambassador to Uganda.
CMI sources say Ndahiro was in Uganda to coordinate these arms delivery with the Rwandan embassy in Kampala.
Analysts have told Radio Katwe that the plan by the Kagame government to overthrow Museveni is the real story behind the current arrest of the Mengo officials.
Museveni just took advantage of the Rwandan coup plot to drag in Mayiga, Nambooze, and Lubega and make it look as if they are part of the plot.
It is well known in Kigali and Kampala that the effective First Lady of Rwanda is Martha Byanyima, the sister to Winnie Byanyima. She has been having a very close relationship with President Kagame and she lives under special state protection in Kigali.
Her presence caused a lot of tension in Kagame's marriage with his wife Jeanette Kagame. On the Uganda side, it is also well known public info that Martha Byanyima's sister Edith Byanyima is in a long standing relationship with Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi of Buganda.
Speculation is that the Byanyima route is the one through which Rwanda was planning to bring in the arms to assassinate Museveni and overthrow his NRM regime. That is why Museveni recently told top NRM officials that the arrested Mengo officials were just mouthpieces for their leader, meaning Kabaka Mutebi.
Other sources say that Rwanda has been funneling money into Uganda to cause misinformation and divisions which are breaking up the NRM party.
Other sources are saying that Rwanda is not involved but Museveni has created this story of treason and a Rwanda coup plot to divert attention from the infighting in the NRM, State House, and the army. We request readers to keep this in mind, that this could be disinformation planted by Myuseveni.
Radio Katwe is trying to get the latest to keep Ugandans informed on what is taking place. These are preliminary reports and some details may change as we cross check. We are doing our best to keep up with the situation as it develops.
We reported two months back that plans were underway to shut down Radio Buganda which is the mouthpiece of the Mengo kingdom. That is the next step to expect following the arrest of the Mengo ministers. Museveni might move to declare a state of emergency in Buganda, sources also warn.
Stay tuned for updates as we get them. Updates and corrections are welcome from knowledgeable sources. Thank you.
